1.Clean Up the Mess Right When You See It

Coming into your house with hungry kids and bags full of groceries can make it difficult to deal with a pet mess right away, but it is important to clean up these messes quickly so that your flooring is not damaged. Urine contains minerals and chemicals that begin to break down and can leave lasting damage or odors. Start by using a thick cloth or several sheets of absorbent paper towels to blot up as much of the urine as you can. Do not rub as this will only push the urine further into the carpet or spread it around on hardwood or tile.

2. Take Care of the Smell

Pet urine is strong smelling, but this smell can be neutralized in carpets by mixing a little bit of vinegar with warm water.  Spray onto the area lightly and blot dry, this should handle the smell.

If the smell lingers, deodorize the area further by mixing ¼ cup baking soda with ¾ cup warm water in a spray bottle. Spray onto the area, this will also help remove any staining the urine may 8 20 pic 11 225x300 - How to Remove Pet Odors and Stains from Flooringhave caused. Allow the area to dry thoroughly, then sprinkle baking soda on top of the area and leave it overnight. Vacuum up the area in the morning.

3. Take Care of the Flooring Underneath

If smells continue to linger, there may be damage to the carpet padding or to the flooring underneath. In this case, your repair may involve replacing carpeting or padding. If you do tear up the carpeting or padding, make sure the floorboard underneath is dry and free from damage. Use fans if necessary to dry the floorboards.
