Spring cleaning can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to make it less intimidating and will get you cleaning in no time.
- Break it down room by room. Some experts recommend starting in a low traffic area such as the dining room or living room. These rooms typically take less time to clean and will provide momentum to keep going forward.
- Remember, not everything has to be done in one day. Devise a game plan for rooms like home offices that may have accumulated a lot of clutter. Break down large tasks into smaller ones. For example you could focus on a bookcase the first day and then the desktop on the second day. Set a timer for 20-30 minutes of cleaning everyday is another strategy to keep you motivated.
- Once you’ve made some progress decluttering, you can put your items into 4 different categories:
-Give Away
-Storage for items out of season
-Put/file away
After decluttering it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get down to the dirty work! If you don’t want to get down and dirty, no worries, we are here to help! At Kruper Flooring, we offer deep cleaning services for decks (see #7).
- Gather your supplies; rags, mops, cleaning solutions, white vinegar, vacuum, and baking soda.
- Clean top to bottom. Dust settles on the floors, so make sure you dust/clean surfaces before vacuuming and mopping.
- Don’t forget your windows and screens. Dirt can settle in the area between screens and windows. You can use a home-made solution of one-half white vinegar and one-half warm water in a spray bottle to clean windows. In addition, you can clean your window screens in the shower.
- Wash your pillows. Not just your pillow cases, the actual pillows. There can be a lot of buildup of dust, oils, and bacteria on your pillows. To clean just throw them in the washer/dryer. Experts recommend doing only 2 at a time.
- Clean major kitchen appliances. For example, Go through items in your refrigerator and pantry. Not only does the inside of your refrigerator need a good cleaning, but it’s also a good idea to throw out any food items whose expiration dates have passed. Experts also recommend moving your refrigerator away from the wall and dusting on top of and behind it. It’s also a good time to clean your dishwasher filter, oven and microwave.
- Rotate/Flip your mattress. This should be done twice a year to extend the life of your mattress. It is also beneficial for your spine.
- Power wash your deck . Warmer weather means that soon we will be spending more time outside. Please call 703-898-5912 to arrange an estimate.
- Replace your shower liner. This can get very moldy so it’s best to replace it.. Shower liners are low in price so this step is easy. It’s also a good time to wash fabric shower curtains in the washing machine (follow manufacturer’s instructions).
